International Maritime Bureau. IMB's task is to prevent fraud in international trade and maritime transport, reduce the risk of piracy and assist law enforcement in protecting crews. It tracks cargoes and shipments and verifies their arrival at scheduled ports. Before 1992, shipmasters and ship operators had nowhere to turn when their ships were attacked, robbed or hijacked either in port or at sea. Local law enforcement often chose to ignore there was a serious problem in their waters. Faced with an escalating level of piracy, the International Maritime Bureau decided to provide a free 24-hour service to the seafarer and established the IMB Piracy Reporting Centre (PRC) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Injuries or accidents that occur on ships other seagoing vessels are governed by "Maritime law". Maritime law, also called "Admiralty law" covers the relationship between private individuals or entities involved in maritime, seagoing or ocean-based commerce. It includes sailors, fishermen, ship workers and passengers of vessels operating on the oceans. For seamen, sailors and ship workers who spend more than 51 percent of his time on a vessel in navigable waters, the Jones Act is legislation that made "Maritime law' a federal obligation. The Jones Act deals with injuries and illnesses that occur out on the water. It means that if you were injured or became ill while on the water, you are entitled to recovery – no matter who is at fault.
