The Johnson County Sailing Society was started in 1969 by some avid, but low key racers to promote the sport of sailing. The Johnson County Sailing Society teaches both on and off the water sailing classes through Johnson County Parks and Recreation District (www.JCPRD.com). To our knowledge, this is one of the few, if not only sailing programs in the KC area for adults that features both classroom and on the water sailing lessons. In addition to Saturday lessons through most of the Spring and Summer months, the club features mixed fleet racing on Sundays from all dinghy classes with a concentration in Sunfish and Sweet 16s. The Kansas Youth Sailing program started in early 2015 and is still in its beginning developmental stages. The program is comprised of many "pillars" in which funding and organization is created. The pillars are organized under an over-arching entity, "Kansas Youth Sailing Foundation". Sailing in Kansas? If you have never tried it, don't laugh. Tuttle Creek Lake provides the sailor with about 17 square miles of water, prevailing southwest winds averaging 12 to 15 knots, bright sunshine, blue skies, and no crowds! For 50 years, sailors in the Manhattan area have been organized in the Blue Valley Yacht Club (BVYC). BVYC has moorings for keel boats, a fenced dinghy park for smaller boats, a private boat ramp, a lift, a hoist for stepping masts, and a picnic shelter. Numerous young people have begun sailing as a result of their membership in the Kansas State University Sailing Club which is a member of the BVYC.
