  • Marinemuseum Den helder Marinemuseum Den helder
The Navy Museum is located at the Oude Rijkswerf, also known as Willemsoord. The grounds belong to the Royal Netherlands Navy, which still uses some of the buildings. Via the main building – where the cash desk and the film theatre are based – you will make your way to the Torentje (Turret). The building was commissioned in 1827 as a warehouse for highly flammable substances. Employees were able to see the Turret's clockwork from wherever they found themselves on the dockyard grounds. Now, the six rooms of the Turret tell the story of the Dutch Navy. Next to the main building sits the Tonijn, the country’s only submarine that is open to members of the public. The museum ships Abraham Crijnssen and Schorpioen are berthed on the other side of the Medemblik building, which is used by the Navy. Further up, at the central square, is where you will find the bridge of HNLMS De Ruyter. Den Helder, Netherlands

  • New Netherland Museum New Netherland Museum
Our truest replica ship, the Half Moon, forged her own maritime history. It is therefore time that our ship, full of stories, also becomes part of the continuum of history that began in 1609. The replica ship was built at Albany, N.Y. at the initiative of one man, Dr Andrew A. Hendricks. Upon her completion in 1989 he graciously donated the Halve Maen to the not-for-profit organization, The New Netherland Museum, which he also established that same year to manage the ship. The ship construction fulfilled Dr. Hendricks dream to use the historic icon as an educational instrument to help underscore the important Dutch contribution to the American way of life and today serves the museum not just as a historic icon, not just as a symbol of mutual heritage, or an prime instrument of education, but also as a catalyst for new Dutch-American cultural initiatives.
