The Cape Hatteras Anglers Club was formed in 1957 by 81 people for the sole purpose of stimulating tourism during the fall season. The Trout Unlimited Anaka Chapter #201 has a significant history surrounding the "Unaka" designation. The name unaka is rooted in the Cherokee language designate unega, which means white. Beliefs reveal, 1 in 4 trees in the Unaka Range were American Chestnut trees prior to the great Chestnut Blight. Chestnuts having long white blossoms, the Unaka Mountains turned white in color during the blossoming of the chestnut trees, and therefore called the White Mountains by the local Cherokee.
