    Marine Mammal Care Center at Fort MacArthur (MMCC) is located in San Pedro, CA. Our primary work is to rehabilitate, and release back into their natural environment, sick and injured seals and sea lions that strand along the Los Angeles County Coastline. We are the only year round rehabilitation facility in Los Angeles County, designated to treat marine mammals. The Care Center is involved in the education of students, school teachers and the general public in conjunction with the Center for Marine Studies.   • Office of Protected Resources Pinnipeds
    The word pinnipedia translates from Latin as "feather or fin foot," referring to their often large fin-like flippers. All pinnipeds must come ashore to breed, give birth, and nurse their young. seals, sea lions, and walruses are taxonomically related to other carnivores, including bears, dogs, raccoons, and weasels (including otters). All pinnipeds are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA); some may be designated as "depleted" under the MMPA. Endangered and threatened pinnipeds are further protected under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
