The American lobster resource and fishery are cooperatively managed by the states and the National Marine Fisheries Service under the framework of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission.

The Lobster Conservancy (TLC) works with fishermen and volunteers throughout the Gulf of Maine region to sustain a thriving lobster fishery through science and community. Our approach to scientific research and public education is to actively involve stakeholders in the process of doing science, and to disseminate the knowledge obtained from such research back to stakeholders, as well as fisheries managers and scientists. Located at The University of Maine, the Lobster Institute is the only organization of it kind. It was founded jointly by Maine’s lobster industry associations and the University – and quickly spread to be an international presence. This site is not about how to buy or cook lobster, rather it is about the animal, its behavior, how it is harvested, and a way of life for those individuals who rely on them for a living. It is for anyone, anywhere who would like to know more about lobsters and how they are harvested.
