  • Scrimshanders
Scrimshaw, a 19th Century maritime art, is still handcrafted today in historic Newport, Rhode Island by resident artist Brian Kiracofe. Brian established the Newport Scrimshander in 1987; he has been engraving nautical scenes on ancient walrus, prehistoric mammoth, and recycled piano key ivory for over 20 years, specializing in Newport scenes and custom designs.

  • Scrimshaw by Robert Weiss
Scrimshaw was once the province of working whalemen at sea as a way to pass the time during voyages that could last five years or more. Today's scrimshanders are highly skilled artists who have selected engraving on ivory as their chosen medium. This new breed of ivory artists uses both historical information and their imaginations to create highly complex works of art in a wide variety of subjects. Foremost among these is Robert Weiss who is regarded by many as the premier practitioner of this art form.

Scrimshaw is the indigenous art form of the American Whaleman. In his idle hours of cruising for whale, he devoted himself to fashioning articles and jewelry of whale ivory. Our scrimshaw is on eco-friendly and other materials.
